In the recent Computational Social Sciences Workshop, Prof. Daina Chiba of the Department of Government and Public Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) of the University of Macau presented his latest research findings. Through descriptive statistics and exploratory analysis, the study analyzed a comprehensive examination of all the bills submitted to the Macao SAR’s Legislative Assembly between 1999 and 2023, and demonstrated the unique status of the Macao Legislative Assembly under the framework of “one country, two systems”.

In the past, it was believed that Macao’s political system was an executive-led system. However, according to the voting records of bills mentioned above, Legislators often use their votes to influence the bills submitted by the Government. Prof. Chiba’s study of local governance in Macao can be used as a benchmark for comparative studies on “one country, two systems” in the future, and to explore how Macao, as a special administrative region of China, has successfully implemented “one country, two systems”, with the hope of providing valuable perspectives on Macao’s political development. It is hoped that this will provide a valuable perspective for the political development of Macao. The research project also includes an analysis of the operation of the Legislative Assembly of Macao and a comparison with the Legislative Assembly of the Hong Kong SAR.

Prof. Daina Chiba is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government and Public Administration of FSS. His research interests include international security, international institutions and quantitative methods.
