Invited by the Russian Centre of FSS, Professor Tong Dan from the College of Foreign Languages, Harbin Institute of Technology gave a lecture titled “Understanding the Russian National Character: A Historical Perspective” on 9th Nov.

During the lecture, Prof. Tong analyzed the major events and people involved in Russian history, and provided a historical angle to disentangle typical traits of Russian national character, such as demonstrative, dualistic, and contradictory. Those traits are deeply influenced by their geographic location, distribution of resources, trade history with adjacent countries, religious traditions, wars, and political reforms, etc. Prof. Tongquoted some interesting historical stories and presented through some Chinese and Russian films, showing how the Russian people formed this contradictory national character in the long history.. And there are still many issues that could be further explored in Russian studies.

Prof. Tong later had a discussion with audience.
