Abstract: This lecture reviews and reflects on my first fieldwork in Russia using “Going Deep” as a clue. “Going deep” is my most profound feelings during this fieldwork. To do a good job in fieldwork, one must not only go into the depths of the space where the fieldwork is conducted, but also go into the depths of time and pay attention to the local history as well as the reporter’s life history, and what’s even more rare is to reach the depths of people’s soul. “Going deep” requires ethnographers to have the “talent of communication” and the “talent of adaptation.” It is in the interaction and mutual adaptation with field sites and local people that ethnographers complete the process of entering, integrating and exploring deep into the field.
