On November 11, the Russian Centre of FSS hosted a lecture delivered by Dr. Gary Rosenshield via Zoom. The lecture, entitled “Dostoevsky and Russian Mission in Asia”, was the fourth of the lecture series presented by Russian Centre to the UM community this academic year.
This year marks the 140th anniversary of the death of Russian realist writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. In his literary heritage, “The Diary of a Writer” occupies an important position. “The Diary of a Writer” covers a wide range of topics, including politics, diplomacy, war, law, religion, literature and art, etc. In this lecture, Dr. Rosenshield led the audience to review this important work, and discussed Dostoevsky’s ideas about Russia’s national rejuvenation and the Russian mission in Asia.
Professor Edmund Li Sheng, Director of Russian Centre, introduced the speaker at the beginning of lecture. Dr. Gary Rosenshield is Professor-Emeritus of Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He specializes in Russian literature of the nineteenth- and twentieth-centuries, with an emphasis on Pushkin, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy.
