The 21st Cross-Strait Academic Symposium on Public Management was recently held at Lanzhou University. Nearly 200 experts and scholars from 73 universities and publications across the strait and the Hong Kong-Macau region gathered to discuss the development of public management as a discipline, contributing insights on public governance in the era of artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and other digital technologies.

Yongzhong Sha, vice president of Lanzhou University, stated that under the comprehensive societal transformation driven by digital technology, a key challenge is building an independent public management knowledge system that meets the new demands of Chinese modernization. This is crucial for advancing the transformation of public governance logic and enhancing its effectiveness. He expressed hope that the symposium would facilitate an exchange of ideas, promote mutual learning and collaborative progress in public management across different socio-cultural contexts, and showcase unique Eastern wisdom and diverse values amid the wave of globalization.

Richard Weixing Hu, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau, pointed out that digital technology offers new perspectives for innovation in public management theory. A governance system centered on data-driven decision-making, algorithm-optimized services, and platform-integrated resources is taking shape. In the digital intelligence era, public management must actively embrace new technologies while safeguarding the bottom line of public interest, ensuring that technological advancements consistently serve the well-being of the people.

The Cross-Strait Academic Symposium on Public Management was established in 2005. Over the past 20 years, it has been held in rotation across the strait and the Hong Kong-Macau region, growing into one of the most influential academic exchange events in the field of public management. The 2026 symposium will be hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau, and a flag handover ceremony was held during the event.
