The ranking is published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy as part of its global academic subject evaluation system. First launched in 2009 and officially renamed GRAS in 2017, it covers 57 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. Based on five categories comprising nine objective indicators—including world-class faculty, research output, research quality, influence, and international collaboration—the ranking evaluates over 20,000 academic subjects from nearly 2,000 universities in approximately 100 countries and regions annually. It is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative subject rankings in the global higher education community.
