The University of Macau (UM) held the 31st UM Scholar Research Forum today (6 March), during which Todd Sandel, professor in the Department of Communication in the Faculty of Social Sciences at UM, delivered a talk titled ‘“Looking for a Son-in-law”: How Chinese Parents Discuss the Qualities of a Marriageable Child on WeChat’. The talk was well attended by students, faculty, and members of the public.
During the talk, Prof Sandel provided an in-depth analysis of Chinese parents’ concerns about their adult children’s marital status, and the growing trend of parents visiting ‘matchmaking parks’ and joining social media groups to seek partners for their adult children. Prof Sandel also presented his research and discussed how Chinese parents define a ‘marriageable partner’ in WeChat conversations.
