A delegation from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau (UM) traveled to Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, for a six-day academic and cultural exchange.

Led by Prof. Weiwen Yin from the Department of Government and Public Administration of UM, 10 students including undergraduates and master’s students, participated in this field research. During the visit to the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo, the delegation engaged in robust discussions with Prof. Sonoda Shigeto, Deputy Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo. The conversations centered around the similarities and differences in Asian studies between China and Japan. Prof. Sonoda highlighted the development of Asian studies at the University of Tokyo and the trends in internationalization at Japanese universities. The Prof. Yin and FSS students also
provided an overview of the University of Macau and the latest development.

In addition to the visit to the University of Tokyo, the delegation also visited the Tokyo National Museum and the Currency Museum affiliated with the Bank of Japan. These museum visits enhanced the students’ understanding of Japanese history and culture. During their research activities at iconic locations such as Tokyo Station and Kamakura, the delegation had the opportunity to fully experience the collision and integration of diverse cultures in this country that seamlessly blends modernity and tradition.

This academic exchange not only enhanced the students’ understanding of the economies and societies of China and Japan, but also broadened their international perspectives, deepened their understanding of cultural preservation and progress, and promoted the unique Sino-Portuguese cultures of Macau and the achievements and contributions in recent years of the University of Macau.
