Abstract: Every election in the U. S. is described as the most important contest in American history. Even so, with narrow Republican majorities in the House and Senate and a President determined to test the limits of executive authority, the 2026 U.S. midterm elections are looking to be especially consequential. Six months out, what can we say about the range of possible election outcomes? My talk will examine fundamentals – including fundraising, candidacy and retirement decisions, and local political factors – to define some possible scenarios and their political and policy consequences.
