Abstract: Malnutrition in all its forms, including undernutrition and overnutrition, remains a leading cause of global preventable death, long-term health risks, and economic loss, undermining progress across multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite its significance, nutrition security continues to be one of the least governed areas in global development. The absence of standardized, nationally and internationally recognized statistics and measures is one of the major drivers of this governance gap. In this presentation, I argue that strengthening global data governance is a critical entry point for improving nutrition policy at both national and global levels. I will highlight recent efforts such as the Cost and Affordability of a Healthy Diet (CoAHD), jointly led by the World Bank and FAO, and the establishment of a new statistical domain on food security and nutrition under the United Nations Statistical Division. These initiatives are transforming how data informs both global priorities and national action. I will share reflections on how stronger global data governance is emerging as a key enabler of more accountable, equitable, and nutrition-sensitive public policy beyond 2030.
