A conference on “China’s Response to the US-Indo-Pacific Strategy” organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) was held at the University of Macau (UM) yesterday (5 Dec). It invited a group of young scholars and senior professors in the field of international relations, who are studying or serving in world-class universities and research institutions, to discuss the ‘Indo-Pacific Strategy’ proposed by the United States in 2018.
Prof Weixing HU, dean of FSS of UM, hosted the conference and pointed out the popularity and the necessity of studying China’s response to the US Indo-Pacific strategy in the current international context. The conference took as the form of an academic seminar. One of the scholars presented his research results, while a professor made his comments as the discussant, following by a roundtable discussion of all participants.
Bo MA, research fellow of the Collaborative Innovation Center of China South China Sea Studies, Nanjing University; Weizhan MENG, assistant research fellow of China Institute, Fudan University; Xiaodi YE, assistant professor of the School of International Relations, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; Yuhang DING, PhD candidate of the Institute of Americas, Social and Historical Sciences, University College London; Chunman ZHANG, associate research fellow of Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Studies, Fudan University; Ji YOU, head of the Department of Government and Public Administration, FSS of UM, had the speeches respectively on different topics, including China’s academic debates on the Indo-Pacific strategy, the possible yielding approach of the Chinese government, the possibility of the Chinese government’s response the ‘hedging’ strategy, the confrontation between the US Indo-Pacific strategy and the Belt and Road Initiative of China, the possibility of China’s adoption of a niche strategy, and the re-invention of the Indo-Pacific strategy to China’s future military deployment. Then they discussed about the background, development status, and future prospects of the US Indo-Pacific strategy. Different views on China’s effective response to the US Indo-Pacific strategy were shared.
