A book titled ‘How COVID-19 Reshapes New World Order: Political Economy Perspective’, written by Prof Edmund Sheng Li in the Faculty of Social Science (FSS), University of Macau (UM), has been published by the major international publisher Springer. The book is one of the first monographs on COVID-19 from the perspective of political economy and the first English monograph in the Greater China region on this topic. It is a comprehensive study with significant academic and policy value.
As a global public health crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic has made a profound impact on the human society. The book aims to answer questions in the field of political economy related to the pandemic, with its content divided into five parts: (1) the pandemic—a brief discussion of the pandemic in 2020, (2) the acceleration of the global power transition: from East to West, (3) a comparison between authoritarian and democratic regimes in the pandemic era, (4) global international organisations under the influence of COVID-19, and (5) regional international organisations under the influence of COVID-19. In this book, the author discusses how the pandemic is reshaping the international order, with an emphasis on potential changes in the patterns of international politics in the post-pandemic era, especially China’s status and role in a multi-polar world.
Prof Edmund Sheng Li is the associate dean (academic affairs) of the FSS, professor of political economy and public policy, director of the Russian Centre, and programme coordinator of the Master of Arts in European Studies. His research interests include urban political economy and international political economy and his teaching areas are economics and international relations. Prof Sheng has published 42 papers in Social Sciences Citation Index-listed journals and five books in foreign languages. He has headed or participated in more than ten key research programmes at national or SAR level. In addition, Prof Sheng received a first prize (research paper category) at both the Third and the Fifth Outstanding Achievement Awards for Macao Research in Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as a second prize at the Eighth Ministry of Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences).
