Professor Liu Jianhong, associate dean of FSS and distinguished professor of the Department of Sociology, was invited to participate in the 22nd (2019) International Academic Symposium on Crime Issues and Countermeasures at National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan. He gave a keynote speech on “The Development of Western Criminology and the Rise of Asian Criminology”. Liu proposed the importance of developing Asian criminology under the current Western-centrism of criminology. Liu proposed the concept of Asian criminology paradigm and three major strategies for developing Asian criminology, and pointed out its future development direction.

Liu Jianhong first proposed the theoretical concept of “Asian Criminology” and made a huge contribution to the development of Asian Criminology. Liu is the founding president of the Asian Society of Criminology and currently the chairman of the General Assembly of the Asian Society of Criminology (2009-2012, 2018-2021). He is the first Asian scholar in the world to be elected chairman of the Academic Committee of the International Society of Criminology ( 2014-2019, 2019-2024). Member of the prestigious Combair Collaborative Crime and Justice Steering Committee (2009-). He also serves as the chief editor of the “Asian Journal of Criminology” (an SSCI journal published by Springer), the “Asian Criminology and Criminal Justice Research” series, and the editorial board of more than 20 international academic journals.
